F.A. Cup – Preliminary Round Replay

Wembley bowed sadly out of the F.A. Cup following a tame showing in this Preliminary Round Replay at county rivals Harefield United, who became the fifth Middlesex side in six seasons to end their interest in the World’s most prestigious cup competition.

Wembley can have very few complaints. The home side set-out a defensive stall from the start. It proved to be an efficient barrier, which the frustrated visitors, despite their efforts, lacked the imagination to breach with any great effect.

Wembley saw plenty of possession during the early stages, but successfully thwarted by a solid Harefield rearguard, they did not really pose a threat. Then, suddenly. in the 19th minute, Wembley found themselves a goal behind.

Their recalled goalkeeper, Grigoili Zulmatashvili, seemed to have Josh Collis’ harmless looking angled strike covered, but ball trickled beyond him and over the line.

Wembley quickly responded. Six minutes later matters were levelled. The persistent Joe Wright on the left, gained control of Richard Brown’s long through pass, which had flown over the Harefield backline.  He cut the ball back into the path of the onrushing Calvin Kasirye, who found the target with a brilliant strike into the top corner.

Further Wembley chances followed and they ended the first-half on top. But they wereunable to sustain the pressure after the break.

The second period was a carbon-copy of the first. Wembley dominating affairs, but they dismally failed to produce a telling break through. And lo-and-behold, in the 75th minute, the Lions were once again caught on the hop by another Harefield counterattack.

A low cross from the left was delivered into the Wembley box and Reece Chaundry arrived unnoticed to stroke the ball home and put the Hares back in front.

Things boiled over a minute later and the two sides were reduced to ten men. Jabir Laraba and Harefield’s Darrell Harris both seeing red after the latter had violently objected to the former’s bad tackle.

Wembley remained on the offensive until the bitter end, throwing strikers Nathan Jallow and Yassine Fehmi-Gil into the mix.  But, alas, they never looked like scoring….and outfrom the F.A. Cup at an early stage once again, they went.

WEMBLEY:  Zuilmatashvili, Pearce, Weir (Webb 59), Walters, Brown, Humphries, Sabti,

(Fehmi-Gil  80),  Carroll  (Jallow 82),  Wright, Laraba, Kasirye.
