Spartan South Midlands League – Premier Division

This was an exceedingly satisfying display by the mighty Lions as they comprehensively destroyed newly-promoted Crawley Green at Barton Rovers F.C.  It was such a one-sided contest that Wembley’s recalled goalkeeper, Craig McCreeth, did have a single shot to save during the entire ninety minutes!

Actually, the result should have been greater as had the visitors’ strike force been a wee-bit more coordinated during the first-half, they would have netted even more goals.

As it was, they had to wait until the 44th minute before commencing the onslaught.  Alex Witham converting a penalty after a Crawley defender had handled Ayoub Amellal’s cross.  It looked a harsh offence, but as the defender’s arm was raised in an unnatural position and blocked the ball, the referee’s decision was correct.

A goal up, the hungry Lions loosened the leash and completely forced their beleaguered hosts into submission after the interval. They doubled their lead in the 53rd minute.

An opening in the Crawley rearguard was caused by Toby Webb’s run down the right.  Joe Wright fastened onto Webb’s pass and fired it towards the far post where Yassine Fehmi-Gill evaded his marker and put the ball into the back of the net.

Witham then hit the crossbar and saw another strike flashed past an upright before goal number three arrived in the 68th minute.  It was almost a carbon-copy of their second goal.  Fehmi-Gil found himself in a similar position to score again after Witham had confused the Crawley defence by astutely stepped over another Wright cross.

Six minutes later, Wright tapped in Wembley’s fourth goal after the electric Witham had weaved his way into the Crawley box and ferried the ball along the goalline.

Wembley’s substitutes came on to add to the torment as they continued to press. Conor Carroll should have had a hat-trick. The scoring was completed in the 89th minute. Zaied Sabti cut-in from the left flank and placed the ball into the danger zone for the onrushing Jabir Laraba to slot home goal number five.

WEMBLEY:  McCreeth, Webb, Humphries, Pearce, Brown, Fekete, O’Reilly,

Amellal, Wright (Sabti 69)), Fehmi-Gil (Laraba 69)), Witham (Carroll 77) .
