Spartan South Midlands League – Premier Division

From zenith to nadir., Wembley’s exhilaration turns into dismay!!!!
In their previous Premier Division home fixture, the magnificent Lions turned on the style to whop Berkhamsted, six-nil.  Thirteen days later against Hoddesdon Town, it was Wembley’s turn to be the whipping boys, they themselves enduring a horrifying six-one thrashing.  Their heaviest home defeat since 2003 when Aveley won 6-2 in an Isthmian League game at Vale Farm.

It is somewhat difficult and mystifying to understand what went wrong. The opening exchanges of this contest were pretty even. But during the latter stages of the first-half the Lions all of a sudden after giving away an unnecessary penalty,, capitulated….and a cascade of Hoddesdon goals followed. Between the 24th and the 48th minute Wembley had a nightmare!

A push in the box resulted in the penalty which Louis Rose converted to put Hoddesdonin front after twenty-four minutes. Then, in the 32nd minute, with a great twenty-yard first-time strike, Rose made it two-nil.

Seven minutes later, Jordon Watson fastened onto a long through pass, rounded the advancing Grigoili Zulmatashvili to plant home Hoddesdon’s third goal. And three minutes before half-time, Josh Lillis appeared at the far-post to give the visitors a four-nil interval lead.

There was even more horror for the bewildered hosts as a minute after the restart, Watson scored a fifth….and three minutes after that he notched his hat-trick by netting Hoddesdon’s sixth to hit the final nail in sad Wembley’s coffin.

There was an end-of-the-game Wembley revival. The unmarked Wayne Walters managing to console the Lions by pulling a goal back from a corner in the 65th minute. While, Yassine Fehmi-Gil should have added a bit more respectability to Wembley’s humiliation, but miscued when well-placed.

But it was all too late……..the damaged had already been done.

WEMBLEY:  Zulmatashvili, Webb (Iley 74), Humphries, Walters, Pearce, Fekete

(Carroll 74), Kasirye, Mota, Wright, Fehmi-Gil, O’Reilly (Weir h/t).
