F.A. Vase – Second Qualifying Round

Not for the first time, Wembley had a player sent-off in a game against Hillingdon Borough.  But in keeping with past situations, the ten remaining Lions fought gallantly to record another win against the visitors, and progress into the next stage of the F.A. Vase.

Charlie Weir saw red in the 24th minute.  Surrounded by visiting players, he allegedly attempted to kick an opponent.  Whether this was the case remains to be seen. But Weir would not have lashed out unless he was provoked, and as usual in such circumstances, the retaliator is punished while the aggressor is not.

Weir had earlier, in the 14th minute, provided the corner from which Richard Brown, with the aid of a defender, put Wembley in front.  But following his departure, the depleted Lions were put under the gosh as the visitors frantically sought to redress the balance during the remainder of the first-half.  And to be fair, they should have done.

They squandered several clear-cut chances with Andrew Harewood winning the Miss-of-the-Match award for somehow fired the ball wide of an empty target from six yards!

Borough were made to pay for wasting their opportunities because In the 43rd minute the Lions went further ahead. Set-up by Timi Salako’s cut-back from the left, the onrushing Adam Humphries made it 2-0 with a stupendous thirty-yard thumping strike.

It proved to be an important goal which lessen the effects of having just ten men. And although Harewood did eventually pull a goal back in the 54th minute, the re-organized Lions, following a couple of tactical substitutions, superbly absorbed any further Borough threat.

The pressure on the Lions should have eased as both Ayoub Amellal and Steve O’Reilly saw goalbound drives blocked by defenders during Wembley counterattacks. But in the end, Wembley successfully held onto their slender two-one advantage to book a first round proper place.
