HOLMER GREEN 3, WEMBLEY 4,

Spartan South Midlands League – Premier Division
Wembley were involved in yet another high-scoring, topsy-turvy encounter, but, on this occasion, Joe Wright 84th minute goal proved decisive and secured them this four-three win at Holmer Green.
The Lions, once again much changed, went a goal ahead after just two minutes. Grigoli Zulmatashvili had just made an excellent save to prevent the home side from scoring first. The ball was pumped forward towards the other end. Jermaine Heron outstripped his marker to claim possession and, after racing clear, he expertly planted itpast the other goalkeeper.
However, Wembley’s lead was short-lived when Zulmatashvili badly erred seven minutes later, tossing the ball into the back of his own net after completely misjudging the flight of a harmless-looking cross. Unfortunately, there was more Wembley defensive woe in the 24th minute. The visitors, who had been forced to reshuffle their ranks following an injury to Wayne Walters, stood motionless to allow the unchallenged Greg Deer to knock home a simple free-kick to put the home side in front.
However, two minutes later, Wembley hit back. Wright found the target from aYassine Fehmi-Gil corner to restore parity at two-two. And then in the 31st minute Wembley regained the lead Fehmi-Gil, at the far-post, redelivered Heron’s uninterrupted cross from the right back into the danger zone for substitute Ayoub Amellal to blast in.
The start of the second-half was a little dull in comparison as Wembley consolidated their slender three-two advantage. But a sudden flurry of attacking activity during the latter stages, reignited the contest. In the 74th minute, moments after Wright had almost extended Wembley’s lead, scooping the ball just over the bar, matters were levelled again when the visitors’ rearguard dismally failed to clear their lines properly following a Holmer Green riposte and Elliott Derby was able to pick his spot with a firm drive.
Three-all, and either side could have clinched victory thereafter. But it was the visitors who struck the vital goal with six minutes remaining. Richard Brown successfully broke up another Holmer Green attack. His long clearance flew over the home side’s backline and fell into the path of the onrushing Wright. He bravely poked the ball goalward before being unceremoniously clattered to the floor by the incoming ‘keeper.
But, Wright’s grimace, changed to joy as he watched the ball roll ever so gently over the goal line for Wembley’s winner.
WEMBLEY: Zulmatashvili, Pearce, Iley, Walters (Amellal 14), Brown, Humphries,
Heron (Salako 84), O’Reilly, Wright (Edun 84), Fehmi-Gil, Webb.
