Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy – Second Round

The last time Wembley visited The Meadow to face Chesham United was in February 1996 for an Isthmian League Division One fixture.   Both clubs were regular foes back then.   How times have changed!!!

Since those days,  Chesham have gone on to establish themselves in the Southern League Premier Division, while Wembley have sadly stagnated to become a Step Five club.  So, this meeting against their RESERVES in the

second round of the Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy was very much a reality-check! Thankfully, against a side struggling in the lower reaches of the first division and who had wily veteran Barry Hayles in their line-up  Wembley, even without a specialist goalkeeper, defender Adam Humphries competently filled-in between the posts, booked a visit to Langford  into the next stage of the competition without a hitch.

Following a fairly even beginning, Wembley took the lead in the 33rd minute. Yassine Fehmi-Gil neatly brought under control Calvin Kasirye’s left-wing centre to set up the approaching Charlie McKee, who slotted the ball past the despairing  United ‘keeper with a perfectly placed low strike. After squandering several promising openings, Wembley were forced to defend for a lengthy period before they found the net again in the 77th minute.

Steve O’Reilly and Ayoub Amellal combined on the right to create an opening for substitute Adrian Dinham, back in Wembley colours following a hernia operation. and after cannoning back-and-forth off a defender and then the keeper, Dinham’s drive rolled over the line.Wembley wrapped up the tie by netting a third goal, four minutes later.  Kasirye shrugging aside his marker to fasten onto Attila Fekete’s through pass before lifting the ball over the incoming ‘keeper and into an empty net with a lovely twenty yard chip.

WEMBLEY:  Humphries, O’Reilly, Weir, Carroll, Pearce (Webb 52), Fekete,

Kasirye, Amellal, McKee (Dinham 70), Fehmi-Gil, Salako.
