F.A. Cup – Extra Preliminary Round

The 2016/17 F.A. Cup competition got underway on Saturday and The Lions began the road to the other ‘Wembley’ with a comfortable four-nil Extra Preliminary Round victory over Daventry Town.

The visitors from the United Counties League First Division were an unknown quantity having decided to fall down two tiers following an arduous spell in the Northern Premier League Division One South Division last season.

But in the event, they were no match for the rampant Lions., who progressed with ease into the next stage of the competition. Joe Wright and new-boy Jabir Laraba, one of four players making their Lions’ debut,  netting two-goals apiece in an emphatic win.

Wright opened Wembley’s account after just ten minutes.  Admittedly, it was a fortuitous strike. Wright’s original attempt following Zaied Sabti’s centre, struck a defender.  However, the ball cannoned off the approaching Wembley striker and looped into the back of the net.

An avalanche of goals should have followed  as Wembley began to dismantle the visitors’ flimsy rearguard almost at will. Countless goal scoring opportunities were squandered.

However, Wembley persisted with the pressure and goal number two eventually arrived in the 35th minute.  Wright neatly clipping the ball over the advancing ‘keeper after fastening onto Ayoub Amellal’s through pass.

Laraba, after combining on the left with Charlie Weir, made it three-nil two minutes later, picking his spot with firmly drilled low drive into the bottom corner.

And any fears fickle home supporters had of enduring a second-half Daventry revival were immediately eased.  The unattended Laraba deftly heading home Wembley”s fourth goal, five minutes after the restart to complete the scoring.

WEMBLEY:  McCreeth, Webb, Weir, Walters, Brown, Humphries, Sabti (McKee 63),Amellal, Wright, Laraba (Jallow 60), Kasirye (Carroll 75).
